The Elefant, or 'Elephant', originated from Porsche's design for the PzKpfw VI Tiger. Henschel won the contract but the Porsche design was repurposed as a tank destroyer. Hitler rushed its development for the 1943 Russian offensive. Many Elefants failed at their first battle, Kursk, due to insufficient armor, slow mobility, and lack of machine guns. Soviet troops could easily disable them in close combat. The remaining vehicles were sent to Italy, where they remained ineffective due to unreliability and lack of spare parts.
